What is Caucus?
In Colorado, the process of nominating candidates for elective office begins with precinct caucuses organized by the major political parties.
Precinct caucuses are local neighborhood meetings of registered voters held every general election year. The Broomfield County Republican Caucus will take place on Tuesday, March 1st, 2016 from 7PM to 9PM at Broomfield High School, 1 Eagle Way in Broomfield.
On the night of the Broomfield County Republican Caucus, the following “meetings” will be held:
The main tent meeting is conducted, with the opportunity to hear from candidates for various state and national offices.
Please note – Per the decision of the Colorado Republican Party, a Presidential Straw Poll will NOT be held at the 2016 caucuses. This applies to the Broomfield County Republican Caucus meetings.
Precinct caucus meetings are held for each of the county precincts.
In the precinct caucus meetings, local political party leaders (Precinct Committee Persons – PCPs) are selected, and the delegates and alternates are elected to the County Assembly.
Those elected then move on to their respective delegate group meetings.
Delegate group meetings are held to elect Delegates and Alternates to the 2016 Higher Assemblies, and 2016 State Convention.
At the group meetings, the County delegates and alternates elected at the precinct caucus meetings can be nominated and elected to the 2016 Higher Assemblies, and 2016 State Convention.
Delegates that wish to pledge themselves to a Presidential candidate may do so, but are not required to do so. Note that if a delegate pledges to a Presidential candidate and becomes a delegate to the Republican National Convention, the delegate must vote for that candidate at the National Convention unless the candidate releases his/her delegates.
Delegates chosen at Broomfield County Caucus (via the meetings described above) will vote in later political party assemblies to designate partisan candidates to the primary election ballot for U.S. Congress, the state legislature, and other district and county offices.
Delegates to the Colorado Republican State Convention will also vote on political party platforms and other State Party party business.
In presidential election years, delegates to State and Congressional district assemblies also vote to elect delegates to national political conventions.
For 2016, the Broomfield County Republican Committee will elect delegates that select the Republican Primary Candidates for US Congressional District 2, Senate District 23, House District 33, and Judicial District 17.
State delegates will attend the State Convention and select the Republican Primary Candidates for US Senator. Delegates to State and Congressional district assemblies also vote to elect delegates to the Republican National Convention.
